Petek Pastanesi

A visit to Famagusta is not complete without at least having a look inside Petek Pastanesi, renowned through the whole island of Cyprus for its sweets and pastries. The family history is fascinating; the origins of Petek Pastanesi go back to the Russia of Tsar Nicholas II, through Iran and the family's service to the Shah, to Turkey and then North Cyprus.

But the inside of Petek's is just as fascinating with its marble floors and its old-style counters laden with decadent pastries and baklava laced with pistachios, vibrantly-coloured nougat and soft loukum (Turkish Delight), beautifully hand-crafted chocolates, individually-wrapped and decorated with miniature flowers, without forgetting the best ice-cream to be found in Cyprus, the authentic chewy Maraş-style ice-cream.
